Athletics
Through athletics, our coaches help our student-athletes develop socially and emotionally, building the skills of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and responsible decision-making, all while building relationships with their teammates, opponents and community members.

Brotherhood
Brotherhood is a living museum where the students “become” a historical individual who overcame a social prejudice while making a significant contribution that changed the trajectory of history. Students learn about different social prejudices while immersing themselves not only in the social limitations of prejudice, but also in the embodiment of the spirit of overcoming those limitations. Learning to not only move beyond any social prejudices they encounter, but also to recognize and have tools to deal with their own personal prejudices.
Clubs
- Yearbook
- Yearbook gives students an opportunity to foster interests in their school community and to help them learn how to utilize and/or expand skills associated with publishing a school yearbook.
- National Junior Honor Society
- NJHS has a service to the exterior and interior community of their school. This is accomplished with activities which include all grade levels, and to incorporate a spirit of giving and charity to and for others, and to promote good citizenship for every member.

- Academic Bowl encourages scholars to continue to learn and help spread that spirit to others. During Bowl tournaments, academic integrity, school representation and pride along through the spirit of competition is displayed by each participating school.

Microsociety
Thoreau's MicroSociety enables teachers to answer two persistent questions that students frequently ask:
“Why do I need to know this?” and “How do I fit in?”
Traditional subjects are studied through the day, then applied “on the job” during Micro. The MicroSociety program connects real-world skills with academic learning and builds on the special needs, unique character, and resources of our particular school and community. With this foundation in place, students have the base they need to succeed authentically as a citizen of a small community.
The MicroSociety program is the only student-based entire school reform effort of its kind. This research-based education program transforms classrooms by providing real-world context for academic learning. Students collaborate with parents, business volunteers, and teachers to create a functioning small community within the school. Students spend one hour or one class period each day in their jobs where they learn to run businesses, apply technology, develop government and social agencies, and create cultural and arts organizations. Gradually, students become immersed in the realities of a free-market economy with taxes, property concerns, income issues, and politics.

Tribes
The TRIBES program at Thoreau was implemented to create a positive, safe climate in which the students can learn appropriate life skills and the basics of group interaction. It consists of daily TRIBES activities, which are based on the community agreements of mutual respect, attentive listening, no puts-downs, and the right to pass. Students are scheduled into multi-age groups consisting of approximately thirteen students and one adult TRIBES leader that meet for 20 minutes at the beginning of the day. TRIBES is an excellent way to build community throughout the school!
TRIBES has become one of the most successful components of Thoreau. This program has effectively bonded a myriad of personalities from every part of our city. It has, without a doubt, provided our students with a tool for growth and personal development.
Community Circles
Students begin each day by participating in a community circle where they can freely discuss matters of personal concern and relevance as well as school-related issues. This environment allows a close affinity to peers with whom they might not otherwise know.
Intramurals
Intramurals are held during TRIBES and allows for competition between tribal groups by participating in basketball, paper airplane contests, tug-of-war, four square, and other physical activities and games.
