Athletics
Through athletics, our coaches help our student-athletes develop socially and emotionally, building the skills of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and responsible decision-making, all while building relationships with their teammates, opponents and community members.

Clubs
- National Junior Honor Society
- NJHS has a service to the exterior and interior community of their school. This is accomplished with activities which include all grade levels, and to incorporate a spirit of giving and charity to and for others, and to promote good citizenship for every member.
- Academic Bowl
- Academic Bowl encourages scholars to continue to learn and help spread that spirit to others. During Bowl tournaments, academic integrity, school representation and pride along through the spirit of competition is displayed by each participating school.
- Chess Club
- The Chess Club is a space for students to learn, practice, and enjoy the game of chess. It welcomes all skill levels—from beginners to advanced players—and promotes critical thinking, strategy, and good sportsmanship. Members participate in friendly matches, team challenges, and may have the opportunity to compete in school or district tournaments.
- Debate Team
- The Debate Team offers students an opportunity to develop strong public speaking, research, and critical thinking skills through structured, competitive debate. Team members learn to analyze complex issues, construct persuasive arguments, and engage in respectful, evidence-based discussions. Students compete in local and regional tournaments, gaining confidence, academic skills, and leadership experience that support success in school and beyond.
- eSports
- The eSports program offers students a chance to engage in competitive video gaming in a structured and supportive environment. It promotes teamwork, communication, strategic thinking, and digital citizenship. Students train and compete in popular games, represent the school in local and regional tournaments, and explore potential career paths in the growing field of eSports and technology.
Microsociety

Thoreau's MicroSociety enables teachers to answer two persistent questions that students frequently ask:
“Why do I need to know this?” and “How do I fit in?”
The MicroSociety program connects real-world skills with academic learning and builds on the special needs, unique character, and resources of our particular school and community. With this foundation in place, students have the base they need to succeed authentically as a citizen of a small community.

This research-based education program transforms classrooms by providing real-world context for academic learning. Students collaborate with parents, business volunteers, and teachers to create a functioning small community within the school. Students may choose MicroSociety as an elective where they learn to run businesses, apply technology, develop government and social agencies, and create cultural and arts organizations. Gradually, students become immersed in the realities of a free-market economy with taxes, property concerns, income issues, and politics.

Advisory
The Advisory program at Thoreau was implemented to create a positive, safe climate in which the students can learn appropriate life skills and the basics of group interaction. It consists of daily advisory activities, which are based on the community agreements of mutual respect, attentive listening, no puts-downs, and the right to pass. Students are scheduled into multi-age groups that meet for 20 minutes each day. Advisory is an excellent way to build community throughout the school!
Community Circles
Students begin each session by participating in a community circle where they can freely discuss matters of personal concern and relevance as well as school-related issues. This environment allows a close affinity to peers with whom they might not otherwise know.
