Attendance Policy
- If a student is ill and must be absent from school for any part of the day, the parent must call the school office at (918) 833-9700 (selecting the attendance option), or e-mail adairro@tulaschools.org, and report the absence by 8:00 a.m.
- All absences must have a written or verbal explanation provided by the parent/guardian within 24 hours of the student’s return to school. An absence for which no acceptable explanation is received shall be deemed unexcused.
- For extended absences/suspensions, student assignments may be found on the appropriate online platform for that class (Canvas, McGraw-Hill, Savvas, StudySync, etc.). For classes requiring paper assignments, requests for assignments should be provided to teachers 24 hours in advance of absence and only provided for 5 days.
- Unexcused absences and excessive tardies can cause a student to be ineligible for athletic and extracurricular events and can result in a revocation of transfer.
- Excused absences for religious holidays shall not be counted for the purpose of determining a student’s eligibility for promotion or credit.
- If Thoreau reaches their weekly attendance goal of 95% Average Daily Attendance (ADA), students will be awarded a free dress day at a time determined by the administration.
- All absences (excused and unexcused) shall be included in the calculation of the 90% attendance minimum. Students that miss more than 10% of the school year are at risk of retention and loss of transfer.
- Students who reach 5 absences for a semester will be asked to sign an Attendance Contract.
- Students attending secondary schools shall be in attendance a minimum of ninety percent (90%) of the instructional time scheduled for any particular class/course in that school (or grade) and make satisfactory academic progress in order to be unconditionally recommended for a passing grade.
- Principals shall review all students’ attendance records reflecting absenteeism in excess of 10% of the scheduled instructional time and shall make a determination, after such review, regarding a recommendation for a failing grade based thereon.
- Parents/guardians shall be notified, in writing, of any recommendation for a failing grade due to excessive absenteeism (absences exceeding 10% of the scheduled instructional time). Actions leading to failing grades due to excessive absenteeism may be appealed by the parent/guardian. (School Board Policy 2204-R)
Tardy Policy
- Students should plan to arrive at school by 8:20a.
- Students arriving after 8:30a will be marked tardy.
- Students who are late to school miss important classroom instruction, are not well prepared for the school day, and cause a disruption to class.
- Students who arrive late to a class or are caught skipping will complete their assignments in a detention space for that period.
- Students who are repetitively tardy will receive additional consequences per the Student & Family Guide to Success.
- In consideration for those who prepare classes and activities for the students, all students are expected to be prompt to arrive and be prepared for classes and school activities.
